Home Adaptations for Seniors Independence (HASI)
Objective
Provides financial assistance to low-income seniors to change the access to or design of their home in order to accommodate the needs of a household member with a disability to continue living independently.
Assistance Available
The maximum forgivable loan is $3,500.
Forgivable loans are subject to budget availability.
Eligibility
- The gross household income must be less than the established income ceilings (see below)
- The residence must be a principal residence
- Either the applicant or his/her family may own the home
- Rental accommodation may be eligible if the landlord consents to the modifications
- A doctor's certificate is required. It must confirm the nature of the disability and what repairs are necessary to accommodate the disability. Click here for Verification of Disability Form.
Eligible Repairs
Examples of eligible modifications include, but are not restricted to:
- access ramps and lifts for wheelchair mobility
- stairway lifts
- widening of doorways
- remodeling of bathroom facilities
- air purifiers
- lighting modifications
- other work deemed appropriate by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation
- There is no requirement that these repairs bring houses up to minimum property standards.
Other Details
- Repairs completed prior to written authorization from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) do not qualify
- Costs in excess of the grant are the responsibility of the homeowner
- The homeowner is responsible for hiring and paying the contractor(s)
- Work must be completed within ninety (90) days of the approval date
- The applicant must continue to live in the home for five (5) years after the work is completed in order to earn the full forgiveness

The number of bedrooms refers to the number of bedrooms required to house the members of the household. It does NOT refer to the actual number of bedrooms in the residence. As an example: a single person and a couple would both have a one-bedroom requirement regardless of the size of their home.
